A plan of roles, not a shopping list

Capsule wardrobe advice usually arrives as a numbered list of garments, drafted for someone about five foot seven. The list is not wrong so much as unusable: a “white shirt” is not a purchase you can make until you know what body length works at your height, and a “tailored trouser” is a category, not an inseam.

So this builder returns garment roles, each with the measurement guidance that makes it buyable on a 5’4″-and-under frame: back length for a blazer, body length for a knit, published inseam for a trouser. What you do with it is shop against numbers rather than adjectives.

It is rule-based and deterministic. The same brief always produces the same plan, every decision traces to a stated rule, and the outfit count is deliberately conservative: layers and shoes do not multiply it, because a blazer over an outfit is the same outfit dressed up.

Methodology

How the plan is decided

Every number below is a fixed constant in the code, not a judgement made per reader.

  1. The wash interval sets the size, not the trip length

    A capsule needs enough clean outfits to reach the next wash, then it repeats. Every day or two counts as 3 days of wear, twice a week as 4, weekly as 7, fortnightly as 14. A two-month trip with a weekly wash therefore needs the wardrobe of the week it is made of, and the plan says so rather than quietly sizing for sixty days.

  2. Bottoms are chosen first, because they multiply

    Each bottom turns every top into another outfit, so bottoms scale with the size band. 8–12 pieces gets two, 13–20 gets three, 21–30 gets four, and tops are then sized to cover the remaining wearing days, with a floor of three because two tops is a uniform.

  3. Purpose implies a second formality band

    Nobody whose capsule is for work wears business formal on a Saturday. A work brief also covers business casual; everyday covers casual; mixed and travel cover smart casual and casual. Pieces are shared between bands rather than duplicated, which is why a fourteen-piece capsule can serve two.

  4. Outfits are counted conservatively

    Distinct top-and-bottom pairs that share a formality band, plus one outfit per dress. A pair that serves two bands is counted once. Layers and shoes are not multipliers: a blazer over an outfit is the same outfit dressed up, and shoes are not an outfit at all. The plan shows what the usual multiply-everything method would have claimed, for comparison.

  5. Your exclusions are absolute

    A reader who rules out skirts gets no skirts, even where that costs coverage. The plan reports the cost as a named gap with the adjustment that would close it, rather than overriding the instruction. Pieces you already own are kept even when they conflict with an exclusion, because they are already in your wardrobe, and the conflict is stated.

  6. Selection order is fixed, so results are reproducible

    Within each function, roles are filled in a declared priority order with the slug as the tie-breaker. There is no randomness and no personalisation: the same URL produces a byte-identical plan for everyone, forever, which is what makes it worth sharing.

  7. Guidance, not a guarantee

    The measurement bands come from published garment specifications and are shortlisting filters, the figures worth checking before you order. They are not claims about any particular garment, and nothing in this tool has been worn or tested.
