Brand Investigation · Part 4

Fourteen Petite Ranges Publish Nothing About the Cut

The silent majority of the directory: ranges that run petite lines and say not one word about how the garments differ. What that silence permits, and how to shop it anyway.

A stack of ruled research sheets with every row left empty, beside a tally of fourteen strokes, with a blank swing tag lying flat at the foot of the stack.

How to read this piece. Every figure below is resolved from the brand directory at build time, not typed into this article: each one names the brand’s own page it came from and the date that page was read. Where a brand publishes nothing, this says so rather than estimating. The interpretation around the figures is editorial, and is marked as such. Nothing here was worn, tried or measured by the publication.

This series has spent three articles on the brands that publish something: how to read a block description, which seven ranges provide one, and what four workwear ranges disclose. This final part turns the lens around. The single most common finding in the whole research programme is nothing at all.

Fourteen of the twenty-one researched ranges run petite lines and publish no description of how the petite garment differs from the regular one. Not a vague description. None. The label exists, the listing exists, and the cut is undescribed.

Why silence is not neutral

A range that says nothing has not said “we redraft the block”, and it has not said “we shorten a standard one”. But the two possibilities do not sit at equal odds behind the silence. Redrafting is expensive and marketable, and a brand that pays for it tends to say so, because it is a reason to buy. The economical read of silence is that there is usually nothing to announce.

That read stays an assumption, and this publication keeps it out of the records: every silent range’s block field is marked not established, never guessed. But an assumption you shop by is different from a fact you publish, and the defensive method below treats silence the way an underwriter treats a missing document.

What the silence looks like in a record

Here are five of the fourteen, chosen to span the directory’s regions and price bands, exactly as their records stand. The pattern to notice is the second column: several of these publish a perfectly good size chart while saying nothing about the cut, which are two different disclosures a range can make independently.

Side by side

Five of the fourteen silent ranges, as recorded. Not established means the brand publishes nothing that answers the question; it never means the answer is no.

“Not established” means nobody has found the brand publishing it. It is not a “no”. Each record on the brand directory gives the reason for every gap.

The full list of fourteen spans every price band the directory has sampled and both sides of the Atlantic. Silence about the cut is not a budget phenomenon, and it is not a regional one. It is the industry default, and the seven ranges that break it are the anomaly worth celebrating.

What can still be established about a silent range

A silent block does not make a range unshoppable, because the block is only one of the disclosures that matter. Several of the fourteen publish size charts, category coverage, shipping and returns, and those establish real things: whether the range reaches your size, whether it stocks the category you need, and what a mistake costs to undo.

Recorded data

J.Jill

A silent range that still discloses usefully: nothing about the cut, but a published size span and chart. The two kinds of disclosure are independent, and this record shows why conflating them loses information.

The defensive method

Shopping a silent range is underwriting without documents, so price the missing document into the decision. The method has three moves, and all three are things this site can help with before a single order is placed.

  • Silence is recorded as not established, never as a shortened block. The defensive assumption is a shopping method, not a fact.
  • A brand can end its silence with one paragraph, and the records here change the day it is re-read.
  • Nothing on this page ranks the silent fourteen. Absence of disclosure is the finding, not a score.

Measurement & fit research

Fit Research Desk

The fit research desk compiles published size charts, garment measurements and inseam data, then records what those numbers mean for a 5’4″-and-under frame. Findings are attributed to the measurements they came from.
