Petite Dresses and Occasionwear, Compared on Evidence

Five ranges built around dresses. What each publishes about fit, sizing and the terms of sending it back.

Three dresses on stands side by side, each with its waist seam at a different height and its skirt cut to a different width, with every hem measured down to one shared floor line.

How to read this piece. Every figure below is resolved from the brand directory at build time, not typed into this article: each one names the brand’s own page it came from and the date that page was read. Where a brand publishes nothing, this says so rather than estimating. The interpretation around the figures is editorial, and is marked as such. Nothing here was worn, tried or measured by the publication.

Occasionwear has a constraint other categories do not: a date. You cannot iterate towards the right dress across three orders when the wedding is in nine days, which makes the returns terms part of the fit decision rather than an afterthought to it.

“Not established” means nobody has found the brand publishing it. It is not a “no”. Each record on the brand directory gives the reason for every gap.

One claim worth reading carefully

Phase Eight states on its own petite page that the range is tailored for a stated height and designed to fit perfectly with no alterations needed. That is the brand’s claim about itself, and the directory records it as the basis of an inference rather than as a measured fact, because “no alterations needed” is marketing copy, not a measurement, however plausibly it is meant.

The two that publish a petite size table

White House Black Market and Reformation both publish petite measurements as a distinct set rather than as a conversion from regular sizing. WHBM’s chart goes further than most by publishing an arm measurement alongside bust, waist and high hip, which is the number that decides whether a sleeve reads as three-quarter or as too short.

Recorded data

White House Black Market

One of only three brands in the directory that publishes the span of its petite size range.

Price tier
$$Our readingMedian full-price item on the brand's own petite listing when sampled on 2026-07-29. The sample, its size, the number of marked-down items excluded and the thresholds used are recorded in brand-price-samples.ts and shown to the reader. No retailer publishes a tier, so this is an inference from listed prices and is labelled one.

Measurement & fit research

Fit Research Desk

The fit research desk compiles published size charts, garment measurements and inseam data, then records what those numbers mean for a 5’4″-and-under frame. Findings are attributed to the measurements they came from.
